Many people are under the mistaken assumption that American Healthcare is Number One in the world, but there is only ONE thing it ranks first in – COST!!!
American Healthcare Is Sicker Than Most Other Countries
You may have gotten some clues about that as you have seen all the news about Obamacare and how prices are rising for insurance in the HealthCare.gov marketplace – but that distracts you from seeing how much more it is rising in other private insurance markets – whether individual or through employers.
You have probably seen the headlines about some drugs where the prices are suddenly jacked up outrageous amounts, but little is said about some of the outrageous prices for many others, much less the steadily increasing prices even for generic medications. You also are not likely to have seen much about what you can do about this for yourself.
You have probably seen the news about epidemics like Ebola and Zika virus and all that is going into solving those problems, yet there are other “epidemics” that kill many more people each year and get neither media attention or funding – and only some of them are infectious diseases. Some of them result from lack of attention to their presence or their prevention and treatment, some are due to a lack of enough providers, and some of them are actually a result of our healthcare system and the places it has gone awry.
It Is Crazy Not To Take Care of Your Own Health
There are many issues that need addressing in and outside the healthcare system, but the most important thing is that you become more aware of what some of these issues are that not only could affect you, or your health or your wealth – but might be affecting them right now. Then you can learn some things you CAN do to look out for yourself and your loved ones. Ironically many of them are really quite simple – if only you know about the problem and have some idea of what to do about it. Some of the problems are even based on the erroneous expectations of medical consumers.
Given that our country ranks behind most of the other industrialized nations in most areas and even behind some of the third world nations – like Bangladesh – in things like infant mortality, there clearly are things being done other places that can be put in place here – and they can’t be THAT complicated. The days of Marcus Welby MD are over, you cannot leave everything to doctors and/or government, but must go back to some basic things that are important in taking care of your own health and preferably preventing problems before they happen.
We will be discussing these issues in a lot more depth this Friday, May 26, 2017 in One Degree Shift with guest expert Dr. Judy Cook. We’ll dive deeper into mental and emotional health and the connection to physical health. We’ll discuss how emotional well-being can help us bring down health care costs and promote happier, healthier lives. Dr. Judy Cook will take the stigma off of mental health. She says, “Our emotions are where we live, and our emotions allow us to make a bigger difference in the world.
